In a somewhat shocking turn of events, Guilford College’s athletic department announced that the football program will be playing against the Clemson University Tigers next season in the soup bowl, replacing Greensboro College in the process.

This decision is just one of a series of moves made by Guilford Quakers football in an effort of making their out of conference schedule more challenging, which would hopefully catch the eye of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

Clemson University football is coming off of a 12-1 2016-2017 campaign that finished with a 35-31 victory over the, then undefeated, Alabama University Crimson Tide in the 2017 College Football Playoff National Championship game.

Guilford does know a thing or two about being a champion, as they were 5-2 in conference two seasons ago and tied for the ODAC crown. Unfortunately, Clemson was not interested traveling to Greensboro if they were going to play the defending ODAC champions, which is the reason behind the Quaker’s 1-6 conference record this year securing their spot on Clemson’s 2017 schedule.

Over the years, it has become more and more apparent that Guilford was preparing their removal of Greensboro College from the annual Soup Bowl. The Quakers stopped returning their calls, left multiple of Greensboro’s texts on read, and even unfollowed Greensboro College’s official Instagram page.

This was also following the 2015 77-13 blowout and last season’s 69-0 shutout (and no, we are not about to make a 69-0 blowout joke; even in the Goofordian).

The Guilfordian traveled down to Clemson, South Carolina to get a pulse of the campus excitement and hype throughout the halls. Unfortunately, most pictures and videos of Clemson fans flipping cars and the “We want Guilford” chants were lost, so you will just have to take our word for it.

We also caught up with the ever emotional Dabo Swinney, the head coach of the Clemson Tigers, on his opinion of Guilford and playing the big Soup Bowl game for the first time.

He paused for a moment, then exclaimed, “I’m not so sure what your askin’ me sonny boy, but I know I tell my boys that when I was there age my momma would make me a big ole bowl of soup before each one of my games with peas, chicken, guilford, pigs feet, pinto beans, ya know all ‘dem fixens and that would give me more strength and power in crunch time than a rooster on day lights savings. When its crunch time here at Clemson, I tell my boys to hone up and eat up some of that damn soup!” (mind you at this point, Swinney is using an imaginary spoon to scoop imaginary soup while looking at me). That would be the only quote I got from Swinney, as I shortly left his office.

Clemson University will not be the only new addition to Guilford’s 2017-2018 schedule as it is rumored that the football program is in talks with the Blue Mountain State Mountain Goats, Dillon High School Panthers, and surprisingly, the Cleveland Browns.
