This spring, Guilford College students will take the stage for the annual Talent Show in Dana Auditorium. Whether performing or watching, the event promises an evening of creativity, entertainment, and connection. The auditions offered students a chance to share their talents, cheer on their peers, and experience the energy that makes Guilford’s community so unique.
So why do students choose to participate in the talent show? According to Guilford College student Trinity Swann, many are motivated “to show off their talents and possibly just to make a fool of themselves.” The talent show encourages students to step outside their comfort zones, take risks, and express themselves in ways that classroom settings often do not allow. This willingness to be playful and authentic is part of what makes the show so enjoyable and memorable.
Talent shows have a long history at Guilford. Previously held events, such as the 2017 Talent Show hosted by the Black Student Union, gave students a stage to express themselves and showcase their creativity. As reported by Maksym Kosachevskyy of The Guilfordian, “Thirty pairs of eyes stared in anticipation at the pink neon lights covering the stage. They waited for raw talent to start.” This comment captures the excitement and community spirit that has characterized past shows and continue to inspire the current Talent Show.
Even before the college hosted its own show, the Early College at Guilford (ECG) held annual talent shows in Dana Auditorium, including a “2013 Interact Club performance” and the 11th‑annual “ECG’s Got Talent” in 2019. These events helped build community and showcase students’ creativity, paving the way for Guilford College’s own Talent Show tradition.
Beyond individual performances, the Talent Show plays a vital role in building community at Guilford College. Attending or participating in the event allows students to connect with one another over shared experiences. It creates a space where peers can appreciate each other’s strengths, support each other’s creativity, and celebrate accomplishments together. In a world where academic and extracurricular pressures can sometimes feel isolating, the Talent Show fosters a sense of unity and belonging.
The event “forms a community because now people can see what you can do,” said Swann.
For students who might be hesitant to perform, the Talent Show is just as meaningful to attend. Even without a personal talent to showcase, showing up to support friends and classmates helps strengthen the sense of community that makes the event special. Every cheer, clap, and word of encouragement contributes to the energy and excitement of the evening. By simply being present, students become part of the celebration and help create an environment where everyone feels seen and appreciated. “Just come out and support. Even if you don’t have a talent,” said Swann.
Talent shows allow participants to reveal their hobbies and interests; whether you can sing, dance, play an instrument, or crack a few jokes, Swann encourages all to reach out and participate in this new event for Guilford–it aims to bring together all of the selected performers for a full evening of entertainment. From impressive singing and dancing acts to moments of humor and surprise, the show highlights the creativity and spirit of Guilford students. It is an event that not only entertains but also reminds everyone of the vibrant, diverse talents present on campus.
Whether someone is a performer eager to share their skills or a student looking to enjoy an evening of creativity and community, the Talent Show at Guilford College is not to be missed. The auditions are the first step, offering a glimpse of the talent, energy, and enthusiasm that make this event so special. Keep an eye out for future announcements regarding audition dates, rehearsal schedules, and other details for the spring Talent Show.
