A look into Guilford’s spring sports

With spring sports just around the corner, I interviewed members of the baseball and softball teams to get an insight on their upcoming seasons.

Baseball:

With baseball well underway and two inter squads over the weekend, Guilford’s team eagerly awaits opening day at Shenandoah University in Winchester, VA. The Quakers are led by Coach Nick Black ‘02, and this year’s Quaker squad is a strong mix of veterans and newer players to compete in this year’s ODAC competition. First-year and third baseman Ryan Mangum highlighted some of the team’s strengths.

“Our team chemistry is excellent,” Mangum said. “Coming to Guilford has allowed me to be a part of a brotherhood that I have never been a part of before and that translates to our on the field play.”

When asked about the team’s upcoming matchup with Shenandoah, he responded, “I like the way we match up going in. We have been playing well as a team and we would like to make a statement to start off the season that we can compete with the top teams in the ODAC.”

Mangum also highlighted Black’s impact on the team.

“In the short amount of time the team has been allowed to practice together, Coach Black has done a tremendous job of guiding the ship and getting the guys ready for the upcoming season,” he said.

Finally, Mangum summarized his overall experience on the team: “It has been a really fun time being a part of the team. I love all the guys and it’s been a pleasure being here.”

It will be an exciting 2021 season for the Quaker baseball team!

Softball:

The Guilford softball squad, led by Coach Dennis Shores, opens up the season against ODAC rival Virginia Wesleyan at home with a double header on March 21 at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. at Haworth Field. Over the weekend, the team held an intersquad with a final score of 23-19.

“We are a very strong offensive team that thrives with runners in scoring position,” said sophomore Gracey Myers when asked about the strengths of the team.

“We’re excited to see how things play out as they are typically one of the top teams in our conference,” Myers said about their opening match-up with Virginia Wesleyan, who is currently sitting at 9-0 in the current season.

Hill emphasized Shores’s impact of the team: “Coach Shores does an excellent job of keeping the players invested in practice and in competition, while allowing the players to be themselves.”

Both players shared their overall experience on the team.

“With COVID-19 it’s been a series of ups and downs but this entire year since we’ve been back it’s been nothing but a positive experience. I tremendously enjoy being able to compete while also being able to be a student and enjoy college,” said Myers.

“Being part of the team instantly gave me the opportunity to meet a lot of interesting people in which some I can see myself being lifelong friends with,” Hill added. “That alone in itself for me has made it an amazing experience.”
