Women’s basketball dominates in early games

Women’s basketball has had a successful season thus far, as they approach conference play. Through six games the Quakers are yet to lose, posting a 6-0 record.

The team enters the season as the favorite in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. This is the first time since 2012 that the team was picked as the preseason favorite.

After their 6-0 start, reigning ODAC coach of the year Stephanie Flamini’s career record sits at 293-166. Only being seven wins away from 300, and with 17 games remaining, she is on pace to pass this milestone this year.

The Guilford College women’s basketball team began their 2019 season with a win over Meredith College, 54-45. Sophomore Lindsay Gauldin scored 22 points and first-year Carisma Lynn had 12 points.

After last season ended sooner than the team would have hoped for, they gained more experience to improve their game for the following season.

Senior Julie Carini said, “This season we have a lot more experience and we didn’t graduate anyone from last year. We have been able to play together for even longer because of that and I think that gives us an advantage.”

The Quakers squeezed a 59-52 victory over Mary Baldwin on Sunday, Nov. 17. First-year Carisma Lynn scored 13 points and 11 rebounds, senior Miracle Walters scored 10 points and 9 rebounds, and senior Monell Dunlap scored 6 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.

As the Quakers record continues to improve, so has their team chemistry, “The team dynamic changed really giving us some more help. A lot of the first-years coming in have stepped up to fill roles needed and some of the returners came back ready to go,” stated Julie Carini.

On Wednesday, Nov. 20, the Quakers traveled to Ferrum College for their first conference game. The women’s basketball team defeated Ferrum College 74-59. First-year Kristen Roberts scored a career and game-high 28 points and sophomore Calyn Davis scored 13 points.

Guilford College’s women’s basketball team is 6-0 overall this season, 3-0 in the conference, and has climbed as high as 25th in the D3hoops.com national poll.

The Quakers had a 62-55 win over Hollins University on Sunday, Dec. 1. First-year Kristen Roberts scored a game-high 22 points and senior Miracle Walters recorded a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Guilford College women’s basketball defeated Roanoke College 60-47 on Dec. 4. Sophomore Calyn Davis led the team with 22 points and senior Miracle Walters scored 18 points and had 8 rebounds.

First-year Kristen Roberts paces the Quakers in scoring with 11.8 points per game. Roberts is also contributing three rebounds per game.

A close second to Roberts in scoring is Senior Miracle Walters. Walters is putting in 11.7 points per game and contributing 9.5 rebounds.

The rest of the scoring is spread evenly as there are three Quakers who are contributing 10 or more points per game.

The Quakers are in action Saturday, Dec. 7 at Bridgewater College at 2 p.m.
