Fall sports come to an end, ODAC begins

Football

The Quakers are still searching for their first win of the season. Guilford lost 49 to 19 at the hands of 18 ranked Hampden-Sydney College. Senior Justin Parker made nine catches for 109 yards and all two of Guilford’s touchdowns. Sophomore Ben King made 10 receptions for 51 yards. Quakers’ junior linebacker Chris Jessup had a team high with eight tackles and a sack to go along with three tackles for loss.

Guilford plays at home Nov. 5 to host Catholic University at 1:00 p.m. at Armfield Athletic Center. The Quakers’ seniors will be honored before the game because it is the final home game of their college careers.

Men’s Soccer

The Quakers lost to Randolph College Oct. 30 in the quarterfinal round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament. Randolph scored twice in the final 18 minutes to break a 2-2 tie, even though Guilford out-shot the Wildcats, 16-14. Sophomore Richard Page and senior Jordan Alexander scored Guilford’s two goals for the game. The loss ended the Quakers’ season with a 10-6-3 record (6-3-1 ODAC). The Quakers had the most wins since 2003 under Coach Jeff Bateson.

Women’s Soccer

The women’s soccer team fell to the top seeded Lynchburg College 9-0. This was on Oct. 30 in the quarterfinal round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament. Lynchburg started fast and gained a 5-0 half-time lead and did not give it up. Guilford’s goalies combined on nine saves in goal. The Quakers finished the season with a 6-11-2 record (3-6-2 ODAC). The team could return as many as 20 players for next year.

Volleyball

In the Quakers road-win over Randolph College Friday night, the team had its second-highest hitting percentage of the season. Junior Traci Teague led the team with 11 kills on .668 hitting. Sophomore Brittany Freeman added another 10 kills and senior Courtney Kozar had five service aces. The team ended their regular season against Salem College on Nov. 3 with a win (25-18, 25-13, 25-14). The Quakers start conference tournament play in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) tonight at 6:30 pm against Virginia Wesleyan College.

Golf

The Golf team won their latest Division III tournament on Oct. 25 at the O-Briant-Jensen Memorial in Greensboro N.C. The Quakers hosted the tournament and took the top two places and also had three golfers among the top 13 finishers in the 90 person field. Junior Mat Hennick was given honors for shooting a total of 142 for first place. Junior Dusty Roberts shot a 69, his lowest round of the season so far, and shared second place with Bridgewater’s Mike Redwood. The team’s next tournament is Feb. 21 at The Old North State invitational in New London N.C.
