Career and Community Learning, “Make the Connection!

In Sept. 1, the Career and Community Learning Center held its 11th Annual Volunteer/Internship Fair in Founders hall, where a crowd of hundreds congregated in Boren Lounge and Sternberger Auditorium to gather information about volunteer and internship opportunities. The event was a great success due to the many vendors on-site.
“This was one of the largest turnouts we have had,” said Claire Dixon, Bonner Scholars Coordinator.
If you missed the Volunteer Fair, there are several more upcoming events sponsored by the Center. These include a Walk-in Resume Review (Sept. 14-15, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.), the Job Expo 2004 at Four Seasons Town Center (Sept. 15), and a Grad School Info Session held in Boren Lounge (Oct. 12, 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.)
The Center is open year-round to assist students in their areas of expertise like career planning and grad school applications. They can also help with writing resumes and job interviews.
Located in the basement of Founders, the office opens at 8:30 a.m. and is staffed into the evenings. Weekend hours are also available because some of the volunteer organizations, like Project Home, complete their obligations on Saturdays.
Sites such as Pathways Tutoring Program offer literacy to children living in Pathways, a temporary shelter. The Career and Community Learning Center also sponsors activities open to the public; the Halloween Feast, held in Oct., allows children from the community the opportunity to trick-or-treat in the dorms on campus.
“There is something for everyone in our 11 committed volunteer sites,” said recent graduate Sunny Matthews, Americorps/VISTA for Multicultural Volunteer Sites.
Staff members like Irene Harrington (Director of Career and Community Learning), James Shields (Director of Community Learning) and Bonnie Krosse (Career Counselor) are eager to assist you achieve success.
“My experience working with the Career and Community Learning center was great. They [the staff] are very patient and informative and helped me find an internship that fit my needs,” said senior Torya Clay.
These resources are free of charge and available to all students, including alum, traditional and CCE.
Whatever the need may be, chances are, your friends at the Career and Community Learning Center can help, because as Krosse said, “it’s career counseling for life.
