Four Fall break work-trips available to students

Each of the four fall break trips can help change lives. Do you want to learn how to work in an orchard, a dairy farm, or learn how to use power tools? This year’s work trips will help you learn all of this and more. Max Carter, who is in charge of the trips, is excited to see a wide range of students participating this year. Transportation, lodging, and food will be provided on these trips. Tompkins Organic Farm

This organic farm is located in Burnsville, NC, in the mountains about two hours away from Guilford. Owner Pat Tompkins hopes to have helpers aid her with her seven-acre farm to prepare for the fall harvest. The work she hopes to accomplish with her Guilford students is working with the apple orchard, prepping the vegetables for the fall, and collecting firewood for the year.
In the past, 5-10 people have gone to Tompkins Organic Farm for fall break and Tompkins would love to have more participation.
Guilford has helped Tompkins for the past eight years. The longstanding relationship with the Tompkins farm has been rewarding for all participants.

Goat Lady Dairy
Goat Lady Farm is located in Randolph County, NC, about half an hour away from Guilford. The well-known dairy farm is in search of workers to help with clearing pastures and woodlands, physical labor of all sorts, clearing trails in woods, and other miscellaneous jobs.
This work trip needs 4-8 people to assist on the farm for the week of fall break.

Friends Disaster Service
Guilford joins a group of Friends Disaster Service volunteers for this work trip. They respond to hurricane, flood, tornado, and fire disaster sites and help fix and rebuild houses that have been destroyed.
“This trip is about building houses, and we are building lives.” Max Carter said. “It does not matter your gender, hair color, or your theology. We are building houses.” Carter attends this fall work project annually and enjoys helping out.
The Disaster Service needs a lot of help and is a great opportunity to use all sorts of power tools. You do not need any experience at all. This trip needs 10-15 Guilford students.

Habitat for Humanity
This is Guilford’s first year working with Habitat for Humanity. A group of 5-10 participants is needed to help house a homeless family south of Asheville, and to help in a donation center. This is another fun opportunity to learn how to use power tools and how to build a house from the ground up, and to make a concrete difference in someone’s life in only a few days of your time.

Please contact Max Carter with any additional questions about any of the four trips at 316-2445.
