Women with balls:

If you are interested in getting exercise, want to make some new friends and enjoy the sunny NC weather, then play rugby.
The women’s rugby team has just begun their fall season. With their first practice Tues., Aug. 26, 2003, they are energetic for the up and coming season. Last year’s season was not as successful as they had anticipated, but they are hoping for a better season because of new drills and a larger team.
With eight returning players and six first-years, they are all set for the season. “Our numbers are a lot higher this year, so we are able to work more on position refinement, and not worry so much about recruiting,” said Jessica Runyon, a returning junior rugger.
This club sport meets three times a week from 3:45 – 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday afternoons with head coach, Jeanine Scrogum. In no time they will be fearless and ready to begin their six game season against powerhouses UNCG, Duke, ASU, WCU, ECU, and NCSU.
Scrogum is working her women hard this year and has high expectations for her team. She will be trying out some new drills and conditioning exercises to make her players more prepared for games. “I think this season we are coming together as a team,” said Scrogum. “We have some experience coming and the rookies seem to have a lot of talent. We’re going to have a lot of fun.”
Team captain, Alison Duncan, is showing leadership out on the fields by helping out Scrogum with drills, pushing the team to a higher physical ability, as well as cheering her teammates on along the way. When questioned on the sport itself she said, “I love rugby because it gives me confidence in my physical ability.”
Natosha Knight, a returning player and equipment manager said, “Rugby is the craziest sport there is. How else could you kick someone’s ass and then go party with them afterwards?”
Games are to begin in a few weeks. If you are interested in joining the team please contact Natosha Knight at X3249 or Alison Duncan at 605-9706.
