Future of Subway Uncertain at Best

Everyone at one time or another has spent time in the lower level of Founders, which houses the bookstore, student health services, the post office, and everyone’s favorite destination, the Underground. The Underground houses the on-campus Subway and serves as a venue for musical performances. However, most people don’t realize that as Guilford makes plans to renovate Founders in the next few years, the future of the Underground, especially Subway, will be put into question.

Various rumors are presently circulating around campus.

People are saying that Subway may be closed by Christmas or the end of the year, and that it may be replaced with a coffee shop. Some people have also heard that Pizza Hut will be opening on the main floor of Founders.

Rebecca Saunders, Director of Student Activities and Event Planning, explains that the future of Founders is ultimately up to the Guilford Students. “I’ve approached Community Senate to set up a task force that will explore the future of the underground as well as meal plan options and food service times,” says Saunders.

Kevin Scott, the owner and operator of Subway, who has been in business at Guilford for two and a half years, has not been advised of Subway’s future.

“Guilford hasn’t given us a yes or no. I simply don’t know our future. All colleges have some kind of eating alternative after their cafeteria closes for the evening. It’s unfair for the students not to know the future,” he said. “We provide a late-night alternative for students and a brand name choice. Ultimately, the college needs to realize that this does have a lot to do with the quality of life for students. If the students want us their voice should be heard.”

In an attempt to rally student support, Scott obtained 400 signatures last spring from students on the meal plan. The students expressed overwhelming support for having Subway on the meal plan. As a whole, students are in favor of making the Underground better and at the same time keeping Subway.

Sophomore Ariel Brandt said, “I like Subway a lot. They need it here. Bigger schools have a food court, and the Underground should have something available to students. Subway should be on the meal plan.”

Other students feel the same way. “Subway should stay, and they should get more stuff down there,” says freshman Ben Coffin.

Saunders also stated that the possibility of Subway being on the meal plan will continue to be discussed. “Guilford is NOT trying to give Subway the boot,” she said.

“However, we are trying to come up with the best combination of food service options that will be profitable for all parties involved. It amazes me how students can always come up with enterprising ideas. I’d like to see something more contemporary and relaxing down there.”
