Controversy ebbs at the Info Desk

Come on Guilford, sing along: “867-5309, 867-5309.” Remember that “romantic interest” that you bumped into at that party the other night? You know, the one that you gave your phone number to, the wrong phone number? Unless you’ve taken the right precautions, your real digits could be just a phone call away at Guilford’s own Information Desk. Rumors have circulated that the Information Desk has been giving out not only students’ phone numbers, but home addresses as well.

This means that virtually anyone with a telephone could call the campus and find out all kinds of personal information about students.

“Very bad, very bad, very bad,” said Rebecca Saunders, Guilford’s events coordinator. “The only thing that should be given out are phone numbers that are available on Lotus Notes, and students have the ability to take those off.”

Saunders said that at the beginning of the school year, it was made clear to all employees what information was not to be given out.

Ali Kleeb, a junior, said, “I really like that it’s so easy to get phone numbers from the Info Desk, but it’s a little scary knowing that anyone can call and get information about me.”

Sara Addison, a sophomore, agreed. “I have no problem with the Info Desk giving out phone numbers,” she said.

Anyone can walk up to the Information Desk and make a request, but Saunders emphasized that nothing other than a student’s phone number would be given out.

“We can’t tell you where someone is staying, but we will give you the number, and there is a phone next to the Info Desk,” she said.

Saunders also said that students could easily have their information removed from the system by dropping by IT&S and filling out a small form.

The Information Desk currently has a list of numbers that are not to be given out due to student requests, but Saunders stressed that if the student wanted the problem solved properly, he or she should visit IT&S.

“I call the info desk once or twice a week to get someone’s phone number and I think that it’s a good service,” junior Anna Belle Peevey said. “I’ll take my chances.”
