Red Oak Brew Pub

(Justin Betson)
(Justin Betson)

Looking to get away from the
monotonous party scene on campus,
but don’t know of anything
going on at UNCG?Then go to the Red Oak Brew Pub,
located on Guilford College Rd,
across the street from CVS. While
it’s no homecoming party, it’s still a
fun place to let loose on a Saturday
night when there’s nothing better
to do.

Red Oak is a typical sports bar.
It is darkly lit, with a huge openseating
bar. Colorful sports banners
decorate the walls. The clientele
range from college students to
people in their mid-40s. The waitors
and waitresses are outgoing, the
beer is cheap, and there is always
an NCAA or Nascar game on TV.

Good food is what makes Red
Oak stand out. While they have
steak, wings, and all the other typical
bar food, their quesadillas are
what give Red Oak its reputation at
Guilford for good food.

I ordered the Rio Grande
Quesadilla. It basically consisted
of black beans, cheddar, Monterey
jack and mozzarella cheese, baked
on an open-faced flour tortilla,
topped with salsa, sour cream and
guacamole. Cooked to perfection,
it seemed to melt in my mouth.
wasn’t even hungry, until I tasted
the quesadilla, and then it was as
I hadn’t eaten all day.

While the quesadilla only costs
$5.99, some of the food can get fairly
pricey, such as the steak, which is
sold at market price. The mixed
drinks are expensive too. A
Margarita costs about $5.00. They
are strong, but served in a small
glass.

A local alternative band, called
Patrick Rock, played for about
hours, doing their usual Saturday
night gig. If you like a cross between
Tom Petty and The Stone
Temple Pilots, then go. Patrick Rock
plays from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. for
your listening pleasure.

All in all, Red Oak is a decent
place to hang out. Mellow Thursday
nights are probably more appropriate
for this bar. However,
you have nothing to do on a Saturday
night (which may very well be
possible at Guilford), then by all
means, go ahead and check the
place out. It may not amount to
your most memorable night at college,
but it’s still worth it.
