Bryan Quad and Milner Hall erupted in yells and shouts of joy and dismay as the Arizona Diamondback’s Luis Gonzalez hit an RBI, game-ending single over the head of the New York Yankee’s Derek Jeter to win, 3-2 on Sunday. Guilford College alum Tony Womack, starting shortstop of the Diamondbacks, hit a shot to right field off “Mr. Unstoppable.” Mariano Rivera, the premier closer for the Yankees, driving in Dave Delucci as the tying run of the game.

Womack was recently awarded the Young Alumni Achievement Award at the all-Alumni Luncheon on Homecoming Weekend. Unfortunately, Womack was not able to attend due to his engagements with the World Series.

In 1991, Womack led Guilford College’s baseball team in stolen bases, stealing 22 bases out of 26 attempts.

Randy Johnson (3-0 in the World Series) and Curt Shilling (1-0) were both awarded the Most Valuable Player award. Curt Shilling started games one, four, and seven for the D-backs, Randy Johnson started games two and six and got the win in relief on Sunday.

Shilling worked wonders for the D-backs, posting an ERA of 1.69 and striking out 26 through 21.1 innings in three games of the Series. Johnson played 17.1 innings, with an ERA of 1.04 and struck out 19.

Mariano Rivera has not blown a save in the postseason since 1997. Everyone thought it was over, but Tony Womack proved them wrong.
