Rock and Roll Greensboro

Sweep the Leg Johnny will rock steady in the Underground April 10th. ()
Sweep the Leg Johnny will rock steady in the Underground April 10th. ()

Holy music explosion Batman! I am pleasantly surprised to report on some amazing shows happening in Greensboro in the next few months. Despite Greensboro’s not-so-amazing music scene, this semester brings a plethora of talented performers to the Triad. These events are only a fraction of what music is coming our way; so keep your eyes open. For more show information for all of central North Carolina, check out www.fiveminuteideas.com, www.ncmusic.com, or www.catscradle.com.
2/11/01- 12 Hour Turn, The Lapse, True North, The Kudzu Wish at Guilford College Underground. Starts at 8:30pm. Cost: FREE!
If you go to only one show this semester, I urge you to come to this amazing group of bands. And this show is FREE, thanks to Union and WQFS.
Twelve Hour Turn is a melodic hardcore band out of Jacksonville, Florida. Ranging from soft and intricate guitar workings, to rhythmic and heavy screams, their live performance is amazing. Both Twelve Hour Turn and True North represent No Idea records (who include Hot Water Music and Less Than Jake). True North, who swings more to the heavy end, plays fast and furious hardcore.
The Lapse, on the other hand, is a Southern Records, soft indie rock band whose vocal melodies engulf the listener in a dynamic and unique way. If you like Chapel Hill rock, then this is for you. The Kudzu Wish is all Guilford, all rock.

2/5/01- Crooked Fingers at Gate City Noise (Tate Street, across from UNC-G). Starts: 8pm.
Eric Bachmann, ex-Archers of Loaf front man, departs slightly from the indie rock world in his new band Crooked Fingers: think bluegrass meets indie rock. A versatile use of banjos and cellos makes Crooked Fingers soft, dreamy, and musically amazing.

4/10/01- Sweep the Leg Johnny at the Guilford College Underground. Starts at 9pm. Cost: FREE!
Southern Records picks up another amazing band in the Chicago-based Sweep the Leg Johnny. This band’s third album, Sto Cazzo, ranges from jazzy and experimental saxophone ramblings to driving rock rhythms. Their live performance is marked with intensity and a tight musical chemistry. All of Sweep’s fans anticipate their first show at Guilford since April of 1998. Their unique style demands that this show in April is not to be missed.

1/30/01- Zegota, The Black Hand, FaceDownInShit at Cedar Street House (691-5777). Starts at 9pm. Cost: $3 donation.
Zegota is the best band in Greensboro. Their politically-charged hardcore music flattens you on your face, making you want more. The Black Hand is from Montreal, Canada with ex-members of Ire. And FaceDownInShit is from Greensboro, pounding out fast grind core. I’ll see you on the corner of Cedar and Friendly at the end of the month.
