The Guilford College women’s basketball team kept its undefeated start alive Monday, Nov. 17, edging Brevard College 72–70 in a tense, fast-paced battle inside Ragan-Brown Fieldhouse. With both teams entering the matchup unbeaten, the game lived up to expectations with standout individual performances, momentum swings and a clutch finish in the final minute.
Guilford’s resilience defined the night. After falling behind 23–10 in the opening quarter, the Quakers (3–0) clawed back behind a pair of career-best performances from sophomores Briahna Scott and Evelyn George. The Tornados (2–1), led by sharpshooter Analee Morris, threatened until the final buzzer, but Guilford’s late composure sealed an important early-season win.
Scott delivered the most complete performance of the night, finishing with 19 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, three steals and two blocks. She attacked the rim, absorbed contact and went 8 of 10 from the free-throw line. Her late free throws and defensive intensity helped steady the Quakers when the game tightened.
George complemented Scott with her most efficient collegiate outing yet. She scored 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting, hit her only three-point attempt and knocked down all four free throws. She also grabbed a career-high seven rebounds. Her scoring stretch in the third quarter helped Guilford take its first lead and flip the game’s momentum.
Senior guard Julianna Walter added key defensive plays with four steals and three blocks while hitting two three-pointers. Sophomore guard Ja’Kiyah Moore also posted a career-best shooting night, going 3 of 8 from the field and hitting two free throws.
For Brevard, Morris was electric. She scored 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting, including 4 of 5 from deep, and repeatedly found lanes in Guilford’s half-court defense. Forward Olivia Miller added 18 points on 9-of-10 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds while controlling the paint through much of the first half.
After Guilford chipped away in the second quarter and trailed 42–34 at halftime, the third period became the turning point. Scott and George led a scoring burst that helped the Quakers outpace the Tornados and take a 55–52 lead into the fourth.
The final quarter was a back-and-forth fight. Brevard tied the game at 68–68 with less than a minute remaining, but Guilford executed when it mattered. The Quakers tightened defensively in the final possessions and secured the win with game-sealing points from Markayla Massenburg.
The victory keeps Guilford perfect and extends its winning streak over Brevard to three straight games.
Up next, the Quakers close out November on the road at Warren Wilson College on Wednesday, Nov. 19. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. The game marks Guilford’s final test before a challenging December slate and the beginning of ODAC play.
For now, Guilford leaves Ragan-Brown with a gritty, hard-earned win—the type of performance that tests a team’s composure and sets the tone for the months ahead.
