As Week 1 of the 2025 college football season officially kicked off on Sunday, August 31, the anticipation was quite high. An intense matchup between the No.10 Miami Hurricanes and the No.6 Notre Dame Fighting Irish served as the spotlight opener for Week 1 as it was a top-10 showdown right out the gate. In a thrilling return, college football made a dramatic statement about its enduring competitiveness and drama heading into the new season.
The much anticipated Miami vs. Notre Dame matchup did not disappoint. The game was a real classic, a fitting opener that had two major programs on national display.
Miami, ranked No.10, had not beaten a top-10 opponent in nearly eight years, but that drought ended in dramatic fashion Sunday night as they beat No.6 Notre Dame in a captivating 27-24 victory.
Senior quarterback Carson Beck made his Hurricane debut count, throwing for 205 yards and throwing two touchdown passes, setting the tone for Miami’s offensive game plan. Wide receiver Malachi Toney became a key target for the Fighting Irish, hauling in six catches for 82 yards and finding the end zone once.
One of the game’s most highlighted moments came from CJ Daniels, who made a spectacular one-handed catch just before halftime which helped Miami take a 14-7 lead at the half. Running back CharMar Brown also played a huge role, banking in a touchdown on a drive at the start of the second half.
But, Notre Dame, led by first time starter QB CJ Carr, did not go away quietly. Carr, making his collegiate starting debut, finished 19/30 for 221 yards, throwing two touchdown passes and adding a rushing touchdown late in the 4th quarter to tie the game 24-24 and complete the dramatic comeback from 14 points down. Despite the rallied effort, Miami held on more in total yards with 324 to 314, and sustained physical momentum throughout the contest.
With the game hanging on by a thread, Miami’s special teams provided a decisive blow. Kicker Carter Davis drilled a 47-yard field goal with just 1:04 remaining on the play clock, pushing Miami just barely over Notre Dame with a score of 27-24. From there the Hurricanes defense made key plays, including a vital sack and intentional grounding penalty, to shut down Notre Dame’s final drive and seal the win.
Coach Mario Cristoball called the win “an unbelievable night”, particularly meaningful because it snapped that long winless streak against top-10 teams and showcased the work and resilience of his program. For Notre Dame, it was a painful game, bringing in early questions about execution and depth, especially in high pressure environments.
Overall, the Week 1 opening game was just a little preview of what makes college football so compelling:
Debut performances, dramatic comebacks, late game heroics and many unexpected twists. Beyond this headlining matchup, Week 1 was seen as a week of dominance, upsets and breakout performances with teams like The Ohio State defeating preseason No.1 Texas in a gritty win with a final score of 14-7, allowing Ohio State to take the No.1 rank. In a battle of the Tigers, No.9 LSU outlasted No.4 Clemson, 17-10.
Miami’s ability to execute when it mattered most and Notre Dame’s valiant rally made for the perfect kickoff to a college football season that already promises unpredictability and plenty of drama to follow.
