This past weekend marked a long-awaited return of the NFL, and with College Football (CFB) also continuing its season, fans were treated to a full plate of exciting matchups. The combination of NFL and CFB made this weekend feel like an official start to the fall season.
Football was nearly on every screen, and every game brought its own level of excitement and intensity. Week 1 in the NFL did not disappoint, as it had several close games, standout performances and surprising moments that allowed fans to become invested. Of all the games played this past weekend, the one that stood out to me the most was the thrilling matchup between the Buffalo Bills and the Baltimore Ravens, which ended in an unforgettable 41-40 comeback win for the Bills.
It had everything a football fan can ask for – explosive plays, dominant performances, high stakes pressure, and a game-winning field goal.
At the beginning of the game, it looked like the Ravens were going to cruise to a dominant win. Derrick Henry, who was making his debut with the Ravens after being traded from the TItans in the offseason, wasted no time proving why he is still one of the most feared running backs in the league. He ran for 169 yards and two touchdowns, breaking tackles and controlling the tempo of the game. Lamar Jackson also played really well, using both his arms and legs to create big plays and extended drives. He finished 14/19 for 209 yards and also put up two touchdown passes. Wide receiver Zay Flowers had a breakout performance, finishing with 143 receiving yards and a touchdown for his stats.
By the third quarter, the Ravens had built a 40-25 lead and looked as if they had this game in the bag. The crowd was loud, the offense was rolling and the Bills seemed frustrated and flat. But one thing about the NFL is that no lead is ever truly safe.
Everything changed in the fourth quarter. After struggling with consistency for much of the game, Josh Allen locked in. He led the BIlls on back-to-back touchdown drives, connecting with the rookie wide receiver Keon Coleman multiple times in key moments. Coleman, who hadn’t been much of a factor earlier in this game, stepped up when it mattered most. His clutch catches helped keep the drives alive and showed that Buffalo may have found a new star. Meanwhile, the Ravens began to unravel.
One of the biggest turning points was a fumble by Derrick Henry that gave Buffalo a short field and set up another touchdown. The momentum had completely shifted, and the Ravens could not recover. With the game tied and under two minutes remaining, Josh Allen marched the Bills down the field yet again.
This set up the veteran kicker Matt Prater for a 32-yard field goal. As time expired, Prater nailed the kick right down the middle, completing the comeback and giving Buffalo an unbelievable 41-40 win.
What made this game so memorable wasn’t just the score or the comeback, it was the way both teams played so differently throughout the game. The ravens dominated on the ground early, using their physical running game to wear Buffalo down. As the game went on, the Bills adapted and leaned into their wide receivers and passing game. Josh Allen showed why he is one of the top quarterbacks in the league, keeping his cool and making big plays when they were needed most.
The Bills showed a lot of character and resilience by not giving up even if it seemed the odds may have been stacked against them. On the other hand, the Ravens showed how quickly things can fall apart when a team starts to lose their groove.
Looking beyond this game, Week 1 of the NFL had a lot to offer. There were several games that came down to the wire, and plenty of rookies made strong first impressions. Some teams surprised fans with unexpected wins, while others reminded us that there is still work in progress for those teams. With college football also delivering some big matchups and exciting finishes, this weekend felt like the perfect kickoff to the football season.
Fans had back-to-back days filled with action and the energy around both leagues was electric.
In conclusion, the Bills 41-40 victory over the Ravens was the perfect way to cap off a wild Week 1. It had the feel of a playoff game, with both teams playing with aggression and high intensity.
Buffalo’s comeback showed their toughness and ability to perform under pressure, while Baltimore’s collapse showed that even experienced teams can fall apart when the pressure mounts. As we look ahead to Week 2 of the NFL season, one thing is certain: Football is officially back!
