First-year student athletes comment on campus life

“I like the small college atmosphere that fits my personality academically and socially, said Meadows. “It’s a beautiful campus and a there’s a lot of friendly people that I get along with.”—Miles Meadows, Mens Basketball

“The coaching staff recruited me since my sophomore year in high school,” said Evans. “Other coaches recruited en masse and it felt like I wasn’t wanted. It was a big plus to know that you’re just not a number.”—Mike Evans, Mens Lacrosse

“I didn’t choose Guilford for tennis,” said Giles. “I have no idea that I was going to play tennis. I chose Guilford for the friendly environment. The people who gave me a tour were real nice and the other schools just read from their books. It’s a lot different from my high school. It’s laid back while getting a good education at the same time. I can get really busy.”—Madison Giles, Womens Tennis

“I just wanted to get out of Providence and explore,” said Cabrera. “That’s why I came to Guilford. It’s exactly what I expected, it’s not that hard so far.”—Emely Cabrera, Softball

“I decided to enroll at Guilford because as soon as I stepped onto campus it felt like home,” said Walters. “I had been to basketball team camp here when I was in the 7th grade and always though it would be a great experience to play here. The first week of classes was overwhelming for me because I was not sure what I expect, but I knew it was going to be challenging.”—Heaven Walters, Womens Basketball

“I find Guilford welcoming,” said Spence. “I know where everything is located. It’s a bit like home.  I need that home-ish feeling.”—Chelsea-Marie Spence, Womens Soccer

“I came here mainly for athletics, but it had a good academic background. Classes are a little harder than high school, but I’ll get used to the pace.”—Josephus Mitchell, Football

“I always looked at my options and thought Guilford was the right fit,” said Milbourn. “People aren’t judgmental at Guilford. You walk down the path and people say ‘hi’ back. In Chicago you don’t make eye contact with people.”—Sam Milbourn, Womens Lacrosse

“The small classroom size at Guilford appealed to me. The academics attracted me to Guilford,” said Rose. “I just feel like I would party too much at a large state school, so I decided on attending Guilford.”—Seth Rose, Mens Soccer
