In the year 2000, Greensboro’s population rose to 223,891, making it the third largest city in North Carolina.
With nine colleges and universities, 92,394 households and 53,958 families inhabiting the city, there are many businesses and entertainment opportunities available in the community.
Here is a brief overview of many useful services offered for students.Walking Distance

Guilford College is surrounded by several businesses accessible by foot.

The Quaker Village, located just across Friendly Avenue hosts dining possibilities such as the Boston Market (tel. 336-292-6336), Chinese Kitchen (tel. 336-852-0827), Elizabeth’s Pizza (tel. 336-299-1772), and Pita Works (tel. 336-856-7482).

Along with restaurants, the Quaker Village features other businesses:

The Fresh Market (tel. 336-855-6114) offers quality groceries with a focus on perishable foods and specialty items. They are open 9 a.m.-9 p.m. seven days a week.

Fitness Today (tel. 336-294-3442) offers an alternative to the Guilford gym. For college students,
there is no initiation fee, and it is $28 a month to join. Hours are
5a.m.-10 p.m. Mon.-Thurs.; 5 a.m.-8 p.m Sat. and 1 p.m.-5 p.m Sun.

Starbucks (tel. 336-292-3020) Open 5:30 a.m.-11 p.m. Mon.-Thurs.; Fri.-Sat. 5:30 a.m.-11:30 p.m. and Sun. 6:30 a.m.-10 p.m.

UPS Store (tel. 336-316-0577) Hours are 8 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Mon.-Fri. and 9:30 a.m.-3 pm Sat.

Friendly Bike (tel. 336-852-3972) is open Mon.-Fri. 10 a.m.-7 p.m. and Sat. 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Besides the Quaker Village, there are other businesses within walking distance:

Harris Teeter (tel. 336-856-7104), a major grocercy store, is very convenient for Guilford students because not only is it walking distance, but it is also open 24 hours.

CVS Pharmacy (605 College Road, pharmacy tel. 336-852-2550, front store tel. 336-547-0469) The pharmacy is open 8 a.m.-10 p.m. Mon.-Fri., 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Sat. and Sun. 10 a.m.-8 p.m., while the main store’s hours are: Mon.-Sat. 8 a.m.-12 a.m., Sun. 10am-8pm.

Amigos Mexican Restaurant (435 Dolley Madison Rd, tel. 336-855-1276) is located in the shopping center behind the Revival Grille next to Once Upon a Child. They serve affordable Mexican and Caribbean food along with non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages.

Banks – all of which are walking distance from campus.

Wachovia (5509 W. Friendly Ave., tel. 336-574-5820) is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Mon.-Thurs. and 9a.m. to 6 p.m. Fri.
BB&T (606 College Rd., tel. 336-433-4150) has lobby hours 8 a.m.-p.m. Mon.-Fri. and drive through hours of 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mon.-Fri.

Bank of America (700 College Rd tel. 336-805-3373) is open Mon.-Thurs. 9 a.m.-5p.m., Fri. 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sat. 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Medical Care – Make sure to verify which insurance companies each medical facility accepts before arrival.

Urgent Medical and Family Care (102 Pomona Dr., tel. 336-299-0000) accepts Guilford College Insurance. The hours are 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Mon.-Fri..

Auto Services

Firestone Tire and Auto Center (3311 Battleground Ave., tel. 336-282-6646) is open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mon.-Fri., Sat. 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sun. 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Autozone (2200 E Wendover Ave., tel. 336-275-1234) is open Mon. -Fri. 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Auto Trends Express (431 Battleground Ave., tel. 336-274-7872) holds operating hours of 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mon.-Fri.

Thrift Stores

Carolina Thrift (2703 High Point Rd., tel. 336-852-1166) is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mon.-Sat. and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sun. This thrift store has a good selection of household items, clothes and shoes.

Goodwill (3717 High Point Rd., tel. 336-294-2033) holds hours of 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mon.-Sat. and1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sun.

Salvation Army (307 W Lee St., tel. 336-274-0259) is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mon. through Sat.

Plato’s Closet (2310 Battleground Ave, tel. 336-282-0018) is open Mon.-Sat. 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. (they stop buying at 7 p.m.) and Sun. 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. (they stop buying at 4 p.m.) Plato’s Closet buys used clothing from customers.

Goodwill Drop Truck (1425 East Cone Blvd) is the location to drop off items

Tate Street
Tate Street (located near UNC-G) is home to several useful businesses. Here are some highlights:

Boba House (332 S. Tate St., tel. 336-379-7444) is open Mon.-Sat. 11 a.m.-10:30 p.m. They serve quality all-vegetarian cuisine with a price range of $11-$20, but one could easily find a meal for under $10.

India Palace (413 South Tate St, tel. 336-379-0744) is open for lunch Mon.-Fri. 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sat. 12 p.m.-3 p.m. Dinner hours are 5 p.m to 10 p.m. Mon.-Sun.

Cup a Joe (411 Tate St., tel. 336-230-0017) is open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mon.-Sat. and Sun. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Tate Street Coffee (334 Tate St., tel. 336-275-2754) is open Mon.-Sat. 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sun. 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Gate City Noise (401 Tate St., tel. 336-272-7883) is a new and used CD along with skateboard shop. They buy used CDs and also put on concerts and events. It’s available online at: www.gatecitynoise.com.
