31 New Cardinals In Rome Pope John Paul II, age 83, appointed 31 new cardinals to the College of Cardinals Sunday. Coming months after the Vatican’s announcement of the Pope’s struggle with Parkinson’s disease, these new appointments, of mostly conservative cardinals are a way for John Paul II to help choose his replacement. Only one American cardinal was appointed.

General Wesley Clark Enters Presidential Race

With the widespread support of Congressional Democrats, General Wesley Clark announced his Democratic President candidacy, Monday, Sept. 22. Gen. Clark was the leader of NATO forces in Kosovo in 1999. He joins millions of Bush dissenters after being a Bush supporter only two years ago. His reasons for running include the unsuccessful and needless war in Iraq and Bush’s administration plunging the country into debt.

Putin and Bush Agree on Little During Summit
During a summit meeting at Camp David, Russian President Vladimir Putin refused to give support in the U.S. war in Iraq. He also refused to stop helping Iran with its nuclear development programs. Putin did, however, agree to “declare opposition” to Iran and North Korea’s development of nuclear weapons.

Harry Potter In College
Frostburg State University in Maryland is offering a course in “The Science of Harry Potter.” The course aims to bridge the gap between science and magic using the popular J. K. Rowlings series as textbooks. Frostburg is not the first to use the series in the academic setting. Both Kent State in Ohio and Cerritos College in California have also introduced such courses.

Police Close In On ‘Blaster’ Master
Seattle juvenile Jeffery Parsons is in court in connection with the modification and spread of the ‘Blaster’ worm virus. The worm crippled an estimated 7,000+ computers across the world including those here on the Guilford campus. This is the second arrest in the search, but law agents are still searching for the creator of the main version.

Mass Orgy On Anniversary
Over 400 Japanese men participated in a three- day orgy with prostitutes in the Chinese city of Zhuhai over the weekend of Sept. 18. The orgy coincided with the anniversary of Japan’s invasion of north-east China in 1931and sparked a media blitz throughout China. The act has created great controversy, with media highlighting the growth of Chinese prostitution and alleged Japanese disrespect for China.
