GET DOWNTOWN
Greensboro sponsors this yearly program to encourage area college students to take advantage of opportunities downtown. Events include live music, vendors, giveaways, and special interest tables. A free shuttle will run from the Guilford campus downtown from 6:45 p.m until 2:00 a.m. It will take place Sat., Aug. 23.
NIGHTCLUBS
Elm St. is home to several bars and clubs. The N Club features college night every Wed. with free admission for women until midnight.There is a $5 cover charge on Saturdays. The Sky Bar is 21+ on Fridays and 18+ on Sundays with a $3 cover charge.
The Blue Hour Bar and Restaurant (21+), located at 360 Federal Place, is open Tues.-Sun. Cover charges are $5 on Wednesdays, $1 Fridays after 10:30 p.m., and $1 Saturdays (free all other days). Dinner and appetizer buffets run Tues., Fri., Sat., and Sun. There is jazz music every night starting at 6 p.m.
Rumba Latina, a Latin club on the corner of W. Friendly and Davie St., offers free Salsa lessons Wed. nights. Intermediate lessons are from 7-8 p.m. and again from 8-9 p.m. Beginner lessons are from 8-9 p.m. and 9-10 p.m. Advanced lessons are from 9-10 p.m. The club closes at 12 a.m. on Wednesdays, 2:30 a.m. Fridays, and 3 a.m. Saturdays.
THEATRE
Smokey Joe’s Caf is coming to the Blue Hour. This Broadway musical features songs including “Stand By Me” and “Hound Dog.” The show will run from Oct. 3-19 (showtimes vary).
The Carolina Theatre (310 Greene St.) presents the Wizard of OZ, which will play Nov. 15-23 (showtimes vary).
Upcoming shows at The Triad Stage (232 S. Elm St.) include Richard Nash’s comedy, The Rainmaker, Sept. 21-Oct. 12; Emily Mann’s, Having our Say, Nov. 2- 23; and, in time for Christmas, A Dickens of A Christmas, Dec. 11-14 and Dec 18-21.
RESTAURANTS AND COFFEESHOPS
Caf Europa is not only a restaurant until 10 p.m., but also a bar that is open Sun. – Tues. until 1 a.m. and Wed. – Sat. until 2 a.m. It is open to minors and serves coffee all night. Wednesday night is Wine Night (all wine half-off). On Thurs. nights all cocktails are a dollar off. Caf Europa is on Davie St. right next to the Cultural Center.
Market St. is home to two wonderful and moderately priced ethnic restaurants, Binh Minh (Vietnamese) and Rearn Thai. Taste of Thai and the India Palace are located on Tate St., which also hosts coffeeshops Cup o’ Joe and Tate Street Coffee, as well as independent music store Gate City Noise.
