Men lose; score agonizingly close

The men’s basketball team lost last Saturday (Feb. 16) to Hampden-Sydney in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament quarterfinals. The score, agonizingly close, was 57-55.In fact, the entire game was agonizingly close. Guilford was behind at the end of the first half by six points (36-30), and scored more points in the second half than Hampden-Sydney (25-21). The score was tied five times in the game and the lead changed nine times.

Senior Aron McMillian scored 16 points – the most of the three double-digit scorers – but missed the crucial shot that would have tied the game with five seconds left. Senior Paul Kindem and sophomore Jevon Clarke both raked in 10 points apiece.

The Hampden-Sydney game caps the 2001-02 men’s basketball season, leaving the Quakers 15-11. 2001-02 was their first winning season since 1988-89.

McMillian and sophomore Josh Connor received second- team All-ODAC honors and Kindem received honorable mention.
