Backlit by a blazing bonfire, Clutch Hound rocked the serene shores of the Guilford lake last Friday night.
With senior Garron Rogers as front man, this hardcore heavy metal band, self-proclaimed “rock and roll outlaws,” pounded out the tunes for the first-year class as part of the CHAOS roster. And they did it for free, just for the rock of it.
Released in April, Clutch Hound’s album – “King of Shadows” – generated favorable reviews. Formed as recently as February, the band has since made several appearances at Guilford.
“We love playing out here,” Rogers said. “Every time we do, we feel like we’re playing at home.” Rogers highlighted the importance of supporting bands on campus as well as within the larger Greensboro community.
Rogers rallied a somewhat tentative crowd to frenzy. “I hope I don’t have to tell you all to move” was the call over the speaker system, challenging the audience to dance.
Midshow, senior CHAOS chair Katy Pomeroy seemed pleased with the turnout. “We try to provide things that will cater to lots of different types of people,” Pomeroy said, “and this does. Everyone here is into having fun.”
Many first-year students did not know what they were getting into when they wandered down to the lake on the fateful eve. First-year Ian Hall-Hough was one such individual.
“It’s not my favorite kind of music, but the band was fun and enthusiastic,” Hall-Hough said. “They’re good at what they do.”
Clutch Hound will rock Winston-Salem Sept. 15 at Brew Ha Ha’s. More information on the band, as well as additional concert dates, is available at www.themusicpages.com..
