The night was calm and Armfield Athletic Center lit up, as the football team played host to Averett University in Guilford’s first-ever night game. The Quakers routed Averett 47-13 and, for the first time since 1999, found themselves on a high at 3-0.
It surely was a night to remember, as this past year Guilford saw a $1.33 million renovation for a lighted stadium. It’s wish became reality for the first time in school history this past Saturday.
“It’s neat to see the plan come together,” said Head Coach Kevin Kiesel. “It’s fun to see the plan actually working.”
The night was certainly one for the ages, as quarterback Josh Vogelbach, ’09, dominated by completing 28 of 37 passes for 360 yards and seven touchdowns in the Quakers beat-down of Averett.
“Josh is playing smart and staying within the offense,” said Quarterbacks Coach Mark Hargis. “He’s working really hard and, obviously, his hard work is paying off; but he still has a ways to go. We have high goals for Josh.”
Joe Joyner, ’07, padded the stat list as well, becoming best friends with the end zone by catching three touchdown passes for the third week in a row.
Defensively, the Quakers manhandled Averett. With two interceptions from Adam Irving, ’11, and 10 tackles from Nate Hummel, ’09, the Quakers defense was certainly a feared beast on this night.
The stands and lawn areas were filled with students and alumni, creating an electrifying atmosphere. The college’s first-ever night match is one for the memory banks.
Guilford brings its 3-0 record into their conference opener, again under the lights of the Armfield Athletic Center, this Saturday, Sept. 22, against Hampden Sydney college.
