The Greensboro location, which opened last month, is the first of its kind in the Triad. For Guilford College students, it’s a short 13-minute drive down Wendover—just close enough to make late-night cravings a dangerous temptation.
The chain, founded in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1950, has long been a staple across the Southwest, known for its made-to-order burgers and bold orange-and-white branding. Until now, locals had to travel hours to get their fix.
On my first visit, I wanted something hearty but not overwhelming, so I tried one of Whataburger’s breakfast items. I ordered the Bacon Taquito with Cheese meal, which came with a side of hashbrowns and a drink for $5.79. The taquito was surprisingly filling—a warm flour tortilla wrapped around scrambled eggs, melted cheese, and crispy bacon. The bacon was better than expected for a fast-food chain: evenly cooked with a satisfying crunch. The hashbrowns were another highlight, with a smoky flavor that paired with the meal.
I wasn’t the only one impressed by the breakfast offerings. Carolina Dirk, a junior at Guilford, swears by the Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit, which she says has quickly become her go-to order.
“The honey butter makes the biscuit,” she said, noting that on her last visit, the extra honey butter drizzle made an already good biscuit even better. She also praised the hashbrowns and ketchup, describing the combination as a standout feature she would “recommend to everybody I know.”
But Whataburger isn’t just about breakfast. First-time visitor and Guilford sophomore Brooke Tsuei stuck to the basics with a No. 1 burger, topped with only tomato and caramelized onions. For her, simplicity revealed the quality of the food. “The bun was toasty and warm, and the onions were caramelized to perfection,” she said, adding that she “definitely recommends and will be going back soon.”
For those with bigger appetites, the chain’s signature burger more than delivers. Chandler Sizemore, a sophomore here at Guilford, noted the sheer size of her Whataburger meal.
“I really liked how big it was compared to other restaurants, and they also have good pickles,” she said, singling out the tangy, crisp pickles as a pleasant surprise. “I would recommend it over other places.”
The Greensboro location has been packed since opening, with cars spilling out of the drive-thru during lunch and dinner rushes. Even with the crowds, the staff keeps orders moving quickly, and the sleek, modern interior provides a welcoming space to sit down and eat. The fact that the restaurant is open 24/7 makes it particularly appealing to college students or anyone in need of a hearty late-night meal.
With heavy competition nearby—Chick-fil-A, McDonald’s, and Chipotle—Whataburger brings something new to Greensboro’s fast-food scene. Its combination of comfort food, customizable burgers, and hearty portions makes it stand out, especially for those seeking variety beyond the usual drive-thru fare.
