Over the weekend the Quakers’ women’s volleyball team (2-7) participated in the Greensboro College Invitational Tournament Greensboro College’s campus.

The Quakers played all five sets before winning the match 3-2 on Friday afternoon against the host team. Later in the day, they again played a full match of five games before dropping the final and decisive set, and subsequently the match, 2-3 to Roanoke.

“I feel great about our play in this tournament,” said Head Coach Emily Gann. We started on a big note and finished off Friday in a strong manner. In the second match we were really tired, playing with tired legs against Roanoke.”

“We trailed 13-8 and then were able to come back and tie the game at 20,” said Gann. Even though we lost the game, I am proud of how they fought.”

On Saturday the Quakers were back in Greensboro College’s Hanes Gym and played against the eventual tournament champion, Piedmont College, in the first match of the day. Attempting to recover from the exertion of Friday’s marathon matches, the Lady Quakers played their starters sparingly en route to a 3-0 loss. In the afternoon session, Guilford took on Peace College in a match that saw mostly back-and-forth play. The Quakers pulled out the second set 25-23, but lost the match, thereby dropping their record in the tournament to 1-3 for the weekend.

“We started this morning playing some of the younger players,” said senior Emma Gunn. “This team is really looking forward to the rest of the season. I’m happy that the first-years got to play, and they played well.”

Senior Taylor Phillips led the way for the Quakers as she was named to the All-Tournament team. Phillips, showing her superior play, recorded 44 digs during the tournament. Gunn also contributed with 30 kills during the tournament.

“Friday we played 10 full sets, so it was important to rest some of our starters and allow others to play the morning match,” said Coach Gann. “Our first-years and sophomores were able to gain experience, and we were able to stay healthy so that it benefits us on down the road. On Tuesday we begin our first conference game, so it was important that we stay fresh for that.”
