Due to heavy traffic, road construction, and automobile breakdowns, China experienced a traffic jam northwest of Beijing that, by Aug. 24, had lasted almost 10 days. The backup spanned a space of nearly 62 miles. Although there has been a heavy increase in road building in the past few years, vehicle purchasing and vehicle use has increased at an unsustainable speed. According to GovMonitor, on Aug. 26 it was reported that the congestion had eased due to massive police efforts which involved knocking on individual vehicle windows to wake drivers up and keep the flow of traffic moving as much as possible. Unfortunately, according to the BBC, the construction that was partially responsible for the jam is not expected to finish until mid-September.HAITI
Haiti’s electoral legal council has ruled that hip-hop/pop icon Wyclef Jean is ineligible to run for the presidency of Haiti. The council made their decision in light of a provision in their constitution requiring presidential candidates to have lived in the country for five years prior to an election. While Jean was born in Haiti, he has not lived in the country since he was a child. Jean, however, has issued a statement that he will challenge the decision and has expressed his belief that the council is corrupt and that he is in fact fully eligible for the candidacy.

New theories on dinosaur extinction have emerged in the last few months. An article in the BBC contradicts previous assumptions, and a new theory has surfaced that suggests dinosaurs may have fallen prey to a double whammy of meteor strikes – the Chicxulub Crater meteor in the Gulf of Mexico, and a newly discovered meteor which created the Boltysh Crater in Ukraine. “It is quite possible that in the future we will find evidence for more impact events,” Professor Simon Kelley of the Open University said to BBC reporters. Now, scientists are pursuing the topic with renewed fervor, hoping to shed more light on the elusive prehistoric mystery of dinosaur extinction.
