Guilford’s Ultimate Fan

Maybe you have heard of the “Schwab,” Entertainment and Sports Programming Network’s (ESPN) stat guy who could probably tell you the name of Michael Jordan’s dog. The Schwab may know stats, but so does junior Eric Weinberg. In fact, there is very little Weinberg does not know about sports. Weinberg calls the D.C. area home, and majors in sport management here at Guilford. And while he surpasses expectations in the classroom, his enthusiasm lies elsewhere. Sports are Weinberg’s passion, and the man certainly knows his stuff.

“My interest level is just so high, and I have a good memory,” said Weinberg. “These things just stick.”

Weinberg was introduced to sports at a very young age.

“My dad was always watching football, so I just got into it,” said Weinberg. Since those days, his life has constantly revolved around sports.

In high school, he excelled in basketball, soccer, and as Weinberg recalled, “a round o’ golf or two.” After graduation, he packed for Guilford and brought his love for sports to Greensboro.

As Weinberg’s first year began, so did his Quaker fanhood. His new-found favorite team caused his love and knowledge of sports to flourish. He immediately became interested in Guilford football, basketball, golf, and attended as many of the games or matches he could.

“I follow Guilford sports pretty close,” said Weinberg. “The games are interesting, and it really helps to support the school.”

But how does he feel about his title as “the ultimate Guilford fan?”

“I don’t consider myself the ultimate fan, just a fan. If you sit down and watch, they are usually pretty good games,” said Weinberg.

But the bigger question is do Guilford athletes know Weinberg?

“He knows everything about sports. You can’t fool him,” said sophomore baseball player Kyle Wooden. “He is at every game.”

“He is the only person I have ever seen at a golf match,” said junior golfer Peter Latimer. “He is a true fan.”

Weinberg says he will go to almost any game. He enjoys football and basketball most, but will catch a soccer, golf, or volleyball game occasionally. Yes, Weinberg roots for every Quaker athlete in every Quaker sport, but nothing can compare to his love for his home-town team, the Washington Redskins.

Now you might find Weinberg playing intramural basketball, watching Sportscenter, or maybe even playing a round of golf, but you can always find him at any Guilford sporting event.

“If you don’t go to the games, you are missing out, you really are,” said Weinberg.

Maybe Weinberg just considers himself a fan, but he may very well be Guilford’s ultimate fan.
