All someone has to do is browse through the sports pages of The Guilfordian to notice very unbalanced coverage of women’s sports in relation to men’s sports. One may notice a small article written about the women’s rugby team, but they will also see a huge picture of the men’s rugby team overtaking the rest of the page. One might notice that the men’s rugby team is made to seem valiant and strong where the women’s team is made out to be struggling and weak. One might notice that the men’s and women’s team both played Duke on the same day, but only the men’s game was covered.
The Guilford College Women’s Rugby Team is a group of dedicated and hard-working female athletes and we want to read articles about our sport as well as the women’s softball team, women’s soccer, women’s lacrosse, and any other female sport for that matter. People on this campus might argue that there are not as many women’s sporting events to cover as there are men’s sporting events. That is simply not the case, but we would not expect them to know that since The Guilfordian, which is supposed to help inform the students about events on campus, failed to report on the events.
The female athletes at Guilford College are just as hardworking and deserving of recognition as the male athletes. Therefore, we deserve the same recognition that men’s sports receive.
