To the editor and to Ms. Lundquist, Having read the article about the response to complaints on the Campus Health Office, I had to comment.
My daughter is a first year student and has attempted to use the campus health office. She has a full academic schedule, and is a swimmer, so her time to schedule health appointments is limited.
She was unable to see anyone on campus for a required athletic physical because her class schedule, lab schedule and other requirements did not fit in with the convenience of the health office schedule. During a protracted illness of bronchitis, she was unable to receive the medical help she needed from Campus Health. Both of these issues were resolved outside of the Guilford campus.
Due to the problems with scheduling appointments, my daughter was unable to practice with her swim team for over a week, for while the campus required a physical they could not fit her in outside of her class schedule, so she was banned from the pool until she made a trip home to have a physical done with her family physician on a weekend, 400 miles from campus.
Ms. Lundquist gave excuses, not solutions to the problem of limited hours for students to see a health care provider. Guilford’s office of Student Life needs to positively address this concern, for if students are not physically healthy, they can not be academically strong. Off campus solutions are not the answer.
As the parent of a first-year, I expect more from Guilford College.
Sincerely,
Sandy Irving
