In an astonishing news conference last week, Kent Chabotar announced that a Waffle House would replace Jazz-man’s in the Underground.
As part of the new operation, Guilford College will pay Waffle House Corp. a small franchise fee of $20,000 a year.
“The money does not really matter; we just wanted to show the students that we care about their nutritional needs; we hear them,” said Jonathan Varnell, interim director of facilities and operations.
The restaurant would be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This is terrific news for those who crave a late night snack on the weekend. “I’m all for it,“ said senior Carlos D’Astigino.
Many students are overwhelmed by the sudden news. “It’s about damn time they got a Waffle House up in here,” said second-year freshman Travis Boyd.
“Well, shoot I have been telling them that they need something in here, I guests they heard my plea, after seven years,” said sixth-year student Will Black. Will is also one of three students applying for unprecedented tenure as a Guilford College student, saying that “If I ain’t going to graduate, I might as well have insurance.”
The college hopes this new transaction will draw new faces to the campus. Under plans by Vice President Randy Doss, enrollment could grow to 23,000 by the year 2010. “We shall be one of the largest universities in North Carolina,” said Anne Lundquist, Dean of Campus Life.
