Fall Sports Wrap-Up: How Guilford Teams Have Fared

If you were there, you want to reminisce about the season that was, and if you were not there, keep reading and find out what you have been missing the past few months. So with that in mind and the fall sports season wrapping up, let’s look back to the season that was. The Guilford football team ended the season with a 3-7 record. Although the team was unable to finish the year with a winning record, the season was full of many highlights for our Quakers. Notably, Guilford regained the Soup Bowl with a strong performance over Greensboro College.

This year’s football team also had numerous personal achievements. Junior Marcus Ballard and red-shirt sophomore Josh Smith both won the ODAC Offensive Players of the Week Award with strong performances over Methodist and Greensboro College respectively. On the defensive side, junior Wes Kidd won ODAC Defensive Player of the Week for a tough performance over Ferrum.

Guilford volleyball ended the season with a 12-17 record, its best season since 1997 even though the team fell to Randolph-Macon in the ODAC Tournament Quarterfinals. Senior Jennifer Pue-Gilchrist was named ODAC Player of the Week not once, but twice during the season. Pue-Gilchrist was also named ODAC Player of the Year, marking only the second time in school history a women’s volleyball player has done that. A.J. Robertson earned a spot on the second team 2002 Verizon Academic All-District Volleyball Team.

After a strong soccer season, the men’s soccer team finished with an 11-6-2 overall record and tied a school record with a 5-3-1 record in the ODAC. This was the team’s first winning record since 1986 and even though the team’s season ended in the ODAC Semi-Finals, its season was certainly a strong one for the whole team. The team also hosted its first ODAC tournament match after earning the fourth seed in the eight-team tournament.

Individual honors were aplenty this year with four players earning all-ODAC soccer honors. Tim Imafidon earned first-team all-ODAC honors, while Ampofo Darko, T.J. Muse, and Noam Sorek all earned second-team ODAC honors. Eric Ralls received honorable mention for also having a strong season.

The women’s soccer team started the season under new head coach Eric Lewis. The Quakers finished the year with a 9-10-2 overall record, 4-6-1 in the ODAC. The season ended with a loss to Roanoke in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference quarterfinals.

Kimberly Mullen, Danielle Brisotti, and Alex Hutton all received ODAC Player of the Week honors. Hutton also earned a place on the Verizon Academic All-District III College Division women’s soccer team. To make the team, a player must be at least sophomore and a starter or an important member of the team, with at least a 3.20 GPA.
