Since the week before break, Guilford’s fall athletes have been busy. Some players are poised to shatter school records as three teams hurtle toward conference tournaments. Tournament time approaches quickly for the men’s soccer team. The team was slated to host a conference tournament game, Nov. 2, a Guilford first; however, a team ranked below Guilford in the conference unexpectedly beat the team ranked above Guilford, and the Nov. 2 tournament game will likely be played elsewhere. The time and location of the match will have been determined by the Wednesday, Oct. 30 games.
The men’s soccer team beat Eastern Mennonite 4-2 on Oct. 26. They also reigned victorious with a 1-0 win over Randolph-Macon Oct. 19, and triumphed 3-2 over Averett Oct. 24. They won Oct. 5 at Bridgewater 1-0, a game that went into double overtime. Also, Guilford played to a draw against Lynchburg on Oct. 9, and lost to Roanoke Oct. 23.
The women’s soccer team won 2-0 over Bridgewater Oct. 27 and 3-0 against Peace Oct. 23, and trounced Averett Oct. 17 with a score of 5-0. They tied with Virginia Wesleyan Oct. 19, but lost to Roanoke, Lynchburg, and Greensboro College.
Kimberly Mullen, a sophomore midfielder, is the team’s top scorer and tied Guilford’s records for goals and points in a season during the victory over Peace.
Danielle Brisotti won the ODAC award for Women’s Soccer Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 21. Brisotti is a freshman and goaltender for the team.
In volleyball news, Guilford won 3-1 over Methodist Oct. 19. The team also won 3-1 over Eastern Mennonite and Ferrum Oct. 4. The team’s season stands at 12-15 overall, and 5-4 in the ODAC.
As the Nov. 8 ODAC tournament approaches, Jennifer Pue-Gilchrest leads the volleyball team in kills, total attacks and digs. She received the ODAC Player of the Week award twice this fall.
The Guilford football team has won three games so far this season, including a 24-12 away victory over Ferrum Oct. 12. They pummeled Greensboro College 21-7 on Oct. 5 in the Sixth Annual Gate City Soup Bowl.
Junior linebacker Wes Kidd earned Guilford’s first ODAC Defensive Football Player of the Week award this season, Oct. 13. Josh Smith, a red-shirt sophomore quarterback, won Offensive Football Player of the Week the previous week, as did junior Marcus Ballard earlier in the season.
