Helping people can be a most rewarding action. The feeling one gets from helping someone in need has been described by my father, an officer of the law, as euphoric, blissful, and enlightening. In light of the recent attacks, there are so many people that need help. Whether it be monetarily speaking, consoling, or providing support, people have been ready, willing, and able to help.
People around the country are rallied around the issue of helping one another. This is visible right here in Greensboro.
Faithaction, a non-profit organization in Greensboro that specializes in promoting tolerance, is offering assistance to Muslim women who are too intimidated to walk the streets. The volunteers are not going out with these women for protection, but for support.
Islamic law requires Muslim women to wear scarves covering their neck and face. Many Muslim women fear that this will make them targets to those people who feel that the Islamic faith is evil.
Faithaction director Mark Sills was quoted by the News and Record as stating, “The Islamic center of Greensboro has received four or five threatening phone messages. Police arrested two men in connection with some of the calls.”
Sills also stated that a Lebanese student at UNCG was beaten on Sept 16, and that there are over 2,500 Muslim families living in the Greensboro area.
This action is being taken to make people feel more comfortable and to help Muslims get their confidence back.
Sophomore Sean Scudder, when asked about the Faithaction program, had this to add. In a most tantalizing way, he elegantly spoke the simple phrase, “helping people in essence helps yourself.”
