They blend in like anyone else at Guilford. One wears Eccentric hats and on occasions a beard and afro. Another assumes the role of soccer superstar with gentle grace and incomparable beauty. The third resembles Clark Kent and takes Japanese. The leader of the bunch is the hardest to find; he poses as a hippie. All easily blend in with the fog that surrounds.
Why all the alter egos? The Student Union must be protected. They are huge players on this campus bringing us bands, movies and other fun-filled fine free events.
I got the honor to sit down with the fab four: President Eric Leif, Vice President Nathan Finley, Secretary Amy Sullivan-Bashinsky, and Treasurer Dan Thigpen.
Guilfordian: Why did you join the union?
Finley: I wanted to be able to see bands I wanted to see and to provide bands that others would want to see. I wanted the music to strengthen community.
G: Amy, how did you get the opportunity to join the union.
Bashinsky: Eric approached me and asked me if I could fill the role of the secretary of Union. I was very excited and eager to take the responsibility and put my mark on Guilford.
G: Dan, what is your role?
Thigpen: Treasurer I cook the books.
G: Eric, what else can we expect?
Leif: A lot of fun activities, good music, and a raucous Serendipity.
G: Amy, what are you looking forward to the most?
Bashinsky: Hands down– Serendipity.
G: We just had a great welcome weekend. Were you guys excited about how things went?
Thigpen: The turnout was ok. But the thing that was most exciting was that the people that did go had a really good time.
G: Nate, how can those interested in helping do so?
Finley: Well , they can assist with the set- up and striking of events. Overall support of what we are trying to do.
G: Dan, do you feel a lot of pressure being in the union?
Dan: Not really. We are all friends so we support each other. We don’t think of ourselves as treasurer, secretary, etc. We think of it as one cohesive unit.
G: Do you think there is anything you can add by being an athlete?
Amy: I think I add a special dimension to the women’s soccer team, and I can only hope to broaden union’s reach.
G: Eric, what is your view on the new alcohol and drug regulations?
Eric: I think it’s a fine idea in that something needs to be done but, the action administration took could lead to a lot of opposition which would take away from our community.
G: You are all amazing people and I thank you for your time.
Union: Thanks.
Talk to your Union officials. Give them your ideas and input. They will listen. Continued support of this organization will lead to one thing…. FUN.
