There is a downside to a team with such energy and offensive strength.

"I think that our biggest weakness is that we get impatient with the ball," Grosso said. "They want to score right away sometimes. We were just swinging at the ball and fouling. Then we started doing what we practiced. Suddenly they stopped simply swinging and started being more patient on attack and controlled."

Over the last few years the women's lacrosse program has improved drastically. In 2004 they tallied a 4-9 record and in 2007 they went 8-9.

"It started with a core of really dedicated freshman," said Grosso describing Kelly Gonzalez, Billie Pellerito, Caryn Washington, Jordan Clodfelter, Mary Hutchins, and Jennifer Maynard. "They kept putting in the work and coming back every year."

Now, the same six are leading the team as experienced seniors.

"That core of leadership has rebuilt the tone of this program," Grosso said. "Their approach has rubbed off on the rest of the team."

Last year, Guilford reached the quarterfinals in the conference championship, but lost to conference runner-up Roanoke College, 7-10.

"We were so close," Grosso said. "For us to take that next step is what we want this year. I think we're good enough."
