Guilford's roads to be named

Quadrangle. Dark Wizard. Sustainability. Richard Nixon. Levi Coffin. Max Carter. Is there a common thread here? If you said no, read on.
You will soon be cruising down roads that bear some of these names on Guilford's campus. All of these names were suggestions submitted in response to a recent survey distributed through the Guilford Beacon. In case you haven't been keeping up, here's the scoop: the City of Greensboro directed Guilford College to name any unnamed roads on its campus.
As a result of the survey, six names have emerged as serious possibilities. They include Elizabeth Fry Road, Sustainability Court, George Fox Road, Quadrangle Drive, Levi Coffin Drive, and Friends School Drive.
The city's directive enhances safety and ensures that Guilford and other colleges are in compliance with North Carolina's building code. Whenever there is an emergency on campus, responders such as the police, fire and medical emergency departments need to be able to pinpoint locations more accurately. Without road names the task is more difficult.
"This may be a really tough project, but it's worth it for safety," said Kent Chabotar, president and professor of political science. "The trouble is if you are not from Guilford, even five minutes of getting lost when a student is in a medical emergency or when we have a fire is five minutes too long."
There have been two surveys administered to get feedback for possible road names. The first survey took place in the fall semester and the second one in January. Names were contributed by students, alums, faculty and administration. The surveys could be accessed through the Guilford Beacon online.
Though the list has been narrowed to six possibilities, there were many others. Several "unique" suggestions came from one particular individual. Some of the names that the administration really wanted could not be used due the fact that they duplicated names already being used in the city or were too similar to other street names which could confuse emergency vehicles.
