"Sandra Day O'Connor's retirement left a huge vacuum for the voice of women" Tyson said.
Abortion has always been a volatile issue. Ana Martinez, co-president of VOX, credits manipulation.
"It's a champion cause, used as a tool or weapon in politics to play on people emotions," Martinez said.
Tyson, her colleague agrees. "It's something for politicians to easily fall back on. I see it as a classic smoke screen."
Roe vs. Wade may seem like a distant issue, but we are not untouched by it. On average one to three unplanned pregnancies are reported to the student health center each year. More cases may occur but are not reported because students go off campus for treatment.
"It isn't for politicians to decide what it is key to for me to stay physically and emotionally healthy," Martinez said.
Roe vs. Wade has had a large impact on women in the 35 years since it occurred. "One of the biggest is that it has changed women's ability to plan when they have children," Schmidt said. "That has allowed for different choices about marriage, work, education, and money."
If Roe vs. Wade were eliminated it's difficult to predict the outcome. "There is concern that it would lead to dangerous abortions," Schmidt said. "I think it would also have a ripple effect that would affect women's choices in ways we can't predict today."
