Somehow cheerleaders have been deemed self-righteous girls in short skirts, who live for the scheming ways of their exclusive clique. On the contrary, the Guilford Quaker cheerleaders defy pretentious labels.

Beyond the grace and agility of gymnasts, and insurmountable enthusiasm, Guilford's cheerleaders are a diverse group of women. Among the 15 of them are a CCE student, a Bonner Scholar, an expert rock climber, a beauty pageant winner, and a member of Guilford's tennis team.

The squad has committed to cheer on the football team at Saturday home games this fall, as well as Saturday home games for the women's and men's basketball teams in the spring.

"It makes us feel very special knowing that we have the cheerleaders backing us regardless of how we do. It is nice to have that support," said JoJo Joyner, a senior on the Quaker's football team, expressing his appreciation.

In addition to game obligations, the squad practices for a minimum of eight hours a week. They also attend mandatory gym workouts, either in the P.E. center or Fitness Today in Quaker Village, every other day. They have also arranged to tutor children during the week at the New Garden Friends School.

In contrast to the type-cast high school cheerleader, who is often perceived as popular, Guilford's cheerleaders have not received such distinction. Guilford's cheerleaders cheer because it's what they love to do. Until recently, all other benefits seemed scarce. Last semester, however, they sought recognition under the athletics umbrella.

After policy conflicts towards the end of last semester, the cheerleaders struggled to acquire the same professionalism that the athletes received. They wanted their coaches to be as disciplined and passionate as other athletic teams were.

This year brought some good news for the team. Although they are not recognized as a NCAA Division III sport, Guilford recognizes and includes them regarding the athletic budget and insurance.

"My love for the sport is what ultimately drives me," said this year's cheerleading captain, junior Alicia Miles, who cheered throughout all four years of high school and her time at Guilford. "Every time we step onto the field or the court we're motivating the fans and encouraging the players, who are often our friends."

Their accomplishment in achieving recognition as an athletic team serves as an even greater motivation. A typical game day for the Quaker's cheerleaders this season consists of a morning rehearsal, uniform preparation, and two hours before kick-off. devoted to stretching, and continued practicing of their game plan, otherwise known as cheers.

They smile proudly the entire time, pumping the crowd from kick-off until the final whistle. A few of them are often still smiling amongst their separate groups of friends at brunch the next morning, muscles still a bit sore from the game.
