Faculty hiring procedure rediscovered 5 years after approval

Kevin Bryan

Issue date: 4/27/07 Section: News
The section for approving new search procedures for recruiting faculty to Guilford College was approved by the faculty to add to the faculty handbook in 2001. This section, section 2.210 did not appear in any version of the faculty handbook until after March 7th of 2006.

"If it is not in the handbook is it being used?" asked Jonathan Malino, former Clerk of the Faculty Clerks committee.

Instead of the 2001 version, the 1995 version of the search process was placed in both the 2003 print version, and the 2005 online version.

The 2001 version, titled "Search Procedures for Recruiting Faculty Guilford College" contains additional information not found in the 1995 document. These include a statement on diversity, methods of monitoring and oversight, methods of advertisement, the requirement and specifications of a campus visit, and a yearly report on the effectiveness of the hiring process.

"In all of the years I have been here, it is the most important action the faculty has taken; we need to be sure it is entered in a timely fashion," said Nancy Daukas member of the Clerk's committee. "It's a breakdown of the process"

It is unclear which policy was official before the recent update of the handbook.

"That's a great question, I wish I had an answer" said Fred Devine, Director of Human Resources.

Section 2.210 wasn't the only update to the faculty handbook this year.

Devine, who volunteered to edit the online version said, "This year has been a busy year; I was inundated with pages and pages of updates"

"We have this huge backlog, last year on the Clerk's committee mostly what we handled is backlog items" said Daukas.

Any new additions to the faculty handbook are required to be marked with the date they were approved and which committee approved them. 2.210 was marked with its date of approval, but not with its date of addition or any information on who approved it.

Most of the additions since 2003 have been added without the dates mentioned.

This is an excellent example of hard-hitting investigative journalism. Kevin Bryan should get many accolades for his clear and concise writing style. Some newspaper should snap this young man up as soon as possible!!
