Leadership, precision, and talent are qualities found not only on the sports fields at Guilford College, but also in Sports Information Director (SID) Dave Walters.

The Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) awarded Walters with the 2004-2005 SID of the year. "It really meant a lot because it was the first award given and was truly an award given by my peers" Walter said.

The ODAC awards this honor once a year to the best candidate that exemplifies qualities such as leadership, ethics, professionalism, integrity, desire, accuracy, and timeliness when completing sports information duties.

"Dave is an extremely dedicated fellow", said Guilford College Athletic Director Marion Kirby. "I was delighted to see that he was recognized by his peers for the hard work he has done in the Athletic department at Guilford."

Unable to do anything but admire Dave and the great impact he has done in the Sports department at Guilford, but he also influences peoples lives all over the campus.

"Dave is a man of great character, faith, and personal integrity." Kirby said.

Walters joined Guilford's staff in June 1996, when he took a one year contract as interim Athletic Director.

"I caught a break," Walters says, chuckling. "I never interviewed for the job."

Before accepting Guilford's offer, Walters thought about working for his alma mater Ithaca College where he graduated with a major in television and radio.

"I had heard that Ithaca was looking for a Sports Information Director," Walters said. "I'm glad I decided to stay at Guilford."

After working in the sports information offices at UNCG and Lafayette College, Walters opted for the smaller, quaint atmosphere at Guilford.

"I like to think of myself as an educator," Walters said, "working with the student athletes is my favorite part of the job, no doubt about it."

With fall being one of his busiest times, Dave's professionalism and hard work is required by every fall athlete and sports teams.
