Two weeks ago, a Kentucky woman was attacked by a woman who may have been trying to steal her baby and it was the attacker was killed. Sarah Brady, who was nine months pregnant, fought off a woman with knife who was trying to steal her unborn baby.
A similar story happened in December, with not such a happy ending. A Missouri woman was strangled and her baby was cut from her womb by a woman from Kansas.
On Feb.11, Brady picked up the telephone in her Fort Mitchell, KY home, when an unfamiliar voice reported that a package of baby items from Babies R Us had been mistakenly delivered to her apartment. With a baby on the way, Sarah Brady had ordered some gifts from Babies R Us.
The voice on the other line was 22-year-old Katherine Smith. Smith used a false name similar to Brady's to explain how she ended up with the misdirected package from Babies R Us.
Brady went to Smith's apartment where she heard the sound of labors pains. She ran inside the apartment and into the room where Smith was faking labor pains. Smith locked the door and tried to attack Brady with a large kitchen knife.
According to thestate.com, Fort Mitchell Police Chief Steve Hensley said, "Ms. Smith pulled the knife, and through the altercation Ms. Brady was able to get the knife free of Ms. Smith's hand and then gain control of the knife."
Brady said maternal instinct helped her fight off the woman who wanted her unborn child. "I do believe that I fought harder because it was for my child," Brady said to the Chicago Sun-Times.
According to the Ohio News, Kentucky Police said 26-year-old Brady acted in self-defense, and no charges were filed. Brady suffered only minor cuts, and is due to give birth within the next week. Unfortunately Katherine Smith died due to severe knife wounds to the neck and stomach.
Smith was sexually abused by her alcoholic father, Timothy Smith. According to Kentucky court documents, Timothy Smith was convicted of sodomizing his daughter between the ages of 7 and 12 years old.
"A lot of times stalkers, or serial killers have been sexually abused in their past child hood, and throughout their childhood they do not develop a conscience like normal people would causing them to think the evil they are committing is not wrong," Karen Tinsley, Assistant Professor of Psychology.
"Usually males are serial killers and like to mutilate or attempt to mutilate their victims. They are inhumane or just unthoughtful by wanting to cut a baby out of its mother's womb," said Tinsley said.
"Sarah has barely slept since the incident and is very, very pregnant," said Brady's mother, Constance Brady, according to the State.com.
"We just want to express our deepest sorrow to the other family involved. It was a terrible tragedy and we're thankful that Sarah and the baby made it through all right," family friend Ron Hatten said.
