Dear Editor:

I would like to respond to Mr. Hayes' response to my letter about security because I feel as though he didn't quite get it.

In his letter he implies that it is simply my immaturity that has led me to write a letter to the editor.

If you talk to any staff member who knows me, my FIRST response is to go and have a one-on-meeting; this letter is very uncharacteristic of me because I was simply at a loss for what else to do.

I would like to say that in no way has Mr. Hayes made himself available to students in a way that would foster my feeling comfortable about going to him or another officer about the issues I presented.

I had actually planned to file a complaint about my studio and when I went to fill out the proper forms I was again given attitude, and decided that it would not make a difference if I filled it or not, so I didn't. I probably should have, but that is not the point.

I will not go into details about the falsities that Mr. Hayes has included in his response because I simply would like to clarify what I was originally saying.

I'm talking about the lack of trust that Guilford students have in security. We don't trust that we will be taken seriously or that anything Public Safety tells us will really happen.

We are asked and told again and again to bring big issues to Security, but when they can't even handle the little stuff how am I supposed to trust they will handle the big stuff? My letter was not about bashing security it was about informing you, in a public forum, of a general feeling of distrust!

It is great that you have been holding office hours, which as a reader of the Buzz I have never noticed until my letter was published (not to say your hours weren't there, but I always notice dean's hours but never yours until now). These open office hours aren't going to fix things. YOU, Mr. Hayes, need to be more visible and approachable!

It is true that Mr. Hayes has invited me in to talk with him, but when that invitation came I was sick and was barely making it to class, let alone up to having a meeting where I fear I will be attacked. Secondly, when that e-mail came, it was NOT from Mr. Hayes! It was from Kizzy Elliot. How one-on-one, open dialogue is that?

Until Public Safety is open and prepared to deal with things honestly (the reason I chose a public forum and not an individual meeting), the student body will continue to mistrust and there will be that divide that security is "trying" so hard to fix.
