Dear editors,
Although sometimes I call my son and ask what is going on, I usually enjoy The Guilfordian when it comes in my e-mail.
Today, however, I was disturbed.
The article on sex could have been humorous, and some of its points are well taken; communication is never wrong, for instance, but on the whole I found it to be distasteful.
Re-write, edit, and then re-write again. That's a hint.
I teach ninth-grade health, and try hard not to make (or let students make) some assumptions your author has made.
To start, she assumes heterosexual sex. This is a problem for some. One mention of condoms is never enough. The types of lubricant safe to use with condoms should have been mentioned.
No, getting tested is not a go-ahead for sex without condoms; one can test negative too soon after infection to show. Yes, this is a difficult subject for many.
I would not want to be a student on your "inclusive" campus made to feel somehow wrong, out of step, out of touch, or stupid for not indulging in sex at Guilford.
Finally, as a mom who reads the newspaper of every college she visits on a college search, I wonder if you are not doing a disservice to your school.
Sincerely,
Claire Molner
