The Guilford womens basketball team got off to an excellent start this year winning two out of their first three games. Since then, however, they have endured a hard road, losing 11 of their last 14 games. Head coach Stephanie Flamini attributes their recent lack of success primarily to inconsistency.

“We have to play 40 minutes of basketball, and our returning players must be consistent,” she said. This season returned only three players to the Quaker Squad.

Dionne Graham, a sophomore guard is averaging nine points per game. Junior guard Jennifer King is averaging 11 points per game. The team’s leader and captain, Courtney Hill, is averaging 15 points per game. Hill, a senior forward, left Guilford after her freshman year and went to UNC Greensboro only to return last season.

Hill has been the leading scorer in half of the Quakers’ games. King and Graham hope to be significant contributors next season.

“The freshmen players aren’t experienced and are expected to be inconsistent”, said Coach Flamini. “Normally freshmen players don’t play a lot because older experienced players are available, but this year we have to rely on freshman players and we shouldn’t have to.”

This is Coach Flamini’s second season as the women’s head basketball coach but she has been involved with coaching for ten years. Flamini began her career at a small college in Pennsylvania and opted to bring her experience to Guilford.

Brittany Green, the 6’2” Quakers center, added that the team’s lack of overall strength has contributed to the rough season. “The team needs to get physically and mentally stronger,” she said. “A strong asset the team possesses is our ability to learn quickly and pick up on our mistakes”.

The womens’ basketball team is down but not out. If they win seven of their nine remaining games they will make the playoffs.

With Flamini’s experience and the developing talent of King, Graham and the rest of the squad, the Quakers have a chance to regain their spot at the top of the ODAC.
